Happy Birthday

Governor Linden

    Happy Birthday to you
    Happy birthday to you
    Happy birthday Mr. President
         (er, Governor Linden!)
    Happy birthday to you

So sang a sultry Marilyn Monroe as President Kennedy celebrated his forty-fifth birthday
on May 19, 1962 at Madison Square Garden. More than 15,000 people attended along with
numerous celebrities.

Marilyn was present in spirit at 12pm SLT on Saturday, June 23, 2007 when thousands of avatars attempted to converge on the Second Life 4th Birthday (SL4B) birthday extravaganza kickoff. The monster 9-sim contiguous build had "Warning: Sim Crossing" signs posted along an interconnected network of highways.

Even with nine sims, it simply wasn’t possible to handle the avatar traffic for the kickoff. The lag made movement almost impossible at times. But, like President Kennedy’s party at Madison Square Garden, it was an event that will go into the history books. Governor Linden has much to reflect on over the past year, not the least of which is exponential growth to almost 8 million avatars.

SL4B lasted from June 23rd until the 30th, and the lag was mostly non-existent on subsequent days. There was so much to view that it was almost impossible to see it all even if you spent a full eight days sight-seeing:

  • Stand-Up Comedians
  • Live Music
  • Live Entertainment
  • Art Exhibitions
  • Educational Exhibitions
  • Historical Exhibitions
  • Role Play Environments

The SL01 hub alone had builds and art that represented Second Life’s first year of life from June 23, 2003 until June 23, 2004 including the Americana Washington Monument, MistyWood Squares, Luskwood replicas of SL’s earliest furry avatars, and one of Second Life’s first airfields, Zoe Airfield. And then there were SL02, SL03, SL04... it really was a case of “you had to be there.”

The quickest way to get around was to hop on one of the numerous golf carts whizzing around the highways. The variety and creativity was almost mind-numbing—from Luxor Temple of Art builds, the Academy of Second Learning display, the Fantasy Tower House, and Relay for Life—to sculpties and photography displays from some of Second Life’s most talented artists.

There was always something new to see around every corner.

SL4B included the innovative Second Life Museum of Publishing, with copies of many “print” (non-blog) publications in SL including The Seventh Sun. If Marilyn Monroe had been around, I’m sure her avatar would have joined the chorus in singing the illustrious Governor Linden a most happy birthday.
