Police Blotter Analysis

Data reveals no shortage
of pranksters, litterers, and spammers

Have you even wondered what happens when Second Life residents run afoul of the law? Have you ever been tempted to file a complaint against someone? What kind of disciplinary action can you reasonably expect Linden Lab to take against the offender?

The Second Life Police Blotter displays the 25 most recent disciplinary actions taken by the Second Life Abuse Team. The data includes the type of offense, where and when it occured, and the disciplinary action taken.

The charts on this page represent 100 disciplinary actions taken during two recent sample week periods. Offenses range from “excessive use of camping chairs” (warning) to “illicitly obtaining another resident’s password and using the password to delete resident’s inventory”
(3-day suspension).

57% of all offenses involved scripted objects. Such offenses include the “repeated creation of offensive images in particle systems” (7-day suspension) and the ”use of caging weapons” (3-day suspension). Over half (56%) of all scripted offenses were for assault, and the rest were for disturing the peace.

The maximum penalty imposed during the sample period was a 14-day suspension. The following offenses received the max:

  • Using an alternate account to continue a campaign of crude and offensive remarks.
  • Disturbing the peace with scripted prim litter, spam, intolerance and offensive language.
